HANGOVERS-what can you do
Hangovers are probably the most common student ailment. They are a result of ingesting too much alcohol for your body to cope with. There is a link between the sugar intake between a heavy drinking session and the sleep duration afterwards as when an individual is out drinking they are in-taking excessive amounts of sugar however when they go home and sleep the sugar becomes withdrawn often making the individual dehydrated, it could be argued that high sugar drinks can aid a hangover the following morning.
Symptoms
Having a hangover feels like having a very bad pulsating headache. It may make you want to vomit, and may affect your vision, make you feel dizzy, or give you the shakes. It's generally pretty unpleasant.
Prevention
Prevention is of course better than a cure. You can just not drink, but that's no fun. A very good way to prevent a hangover is to drink a couple of pints of water before you go to bed. This along with sleeping for as long as possible seems to be the best way to drink without the danger of feeling awful. Also what i find very useful (stim90) is drinking soft sugary drinks in between alcoholic drinks. I heard it on the radio and has since been very useful in nights out before work the next day. Its easy and you can get like half a pint of coke or whatever and say to your mates its vodka and coke!
Another preventative measure is to take a tablet or two of NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) with the water mentioned above. It really works!

Vomiting soon after drinking will generally clear the alcohol from your system but really shouldn't induced. Morning vomiting is horrible. Wait at least half an hour before brushing your teeth, as doing so immediately afterwards will rub the acid in, and weaken and damage the teeth
If you need to stop vomiting or stop the threat of (if you are trying to pull someone or need to use public transport or such), the best thing is ginger. Root ginger eaten straight or in a tea is extremely good to stop you vomiting and will get rid of nausea. It also freshens the mouth wonderfully (better then mints) after throwing up.

Psychological: Stress; anxiety about not being able to sleep, relationship problems etc.etc.
Psychiatric: depression; dementia.
Physiological: noise, light, snoring, jet lag, etc.
Pharmacological: alcohol, antidepressants, decongestants.

So, I've compiled a list of helpful tips you can do to improve your sleep. These come from various sources, most of which have been approved by a doctor.
Establish a regular sleep schedule. This involves setting a regular bedtime and wake-up time and making every attempt to stick to it, including on the weekends. This will help to set the body's clock in a way that will make nighttime sleep deeper and more consistent.
Avoid taking naps, especially in the afternoon.
I'd suggest waiting at least half an hour before going to be if you've just been reading or watching television. Our minds are still being stimulated. And an overstimulated mind, along with anxiety and stress, is what keeps us awake. It's all those thoughts in our head we have to get rid of before we can get to sleep. The last thing we need is more input into our heads from television or books.
Take a short walk before bed, presuming you live in a perfectly safe area. Light exercise aids sleep.
Exercise regularly during the day. This needn't be a marathon every day, just walking the dog to get fresh air will be sufficient.
Use the bed only for sleep and sex, not reading or watching television. This is largely so you don't associate your bed with anything else other than sleeping.
If you do not fall asleep fairly quickly, get out of bed. Do not return until you are feeling drowsy. Again, this is for similar reasons as above.
Do not over-focus on falling asleep by watching the clock.
Set up a regular bedtime routine that revolves around an activity that helps you unwind.
Avoid caffeine, and other stimulants, especially late in the day.

NATURAL WAYS TO CONTROL STRESS

If your symptoms appear to be getting worse or don’t improve after a few days the cause could be bacterial and you may need to consult your doctor about antibiotics.
I have Diarrhoea and Vomiting
When you are in halls this is probably the last problem that you want to have however it is not uncommon. This is often caused by a bacterium or virus that you have eaten in your food and will usually resolve itself within 48 hours. During this time there are some steps that you can take to ease the problem.
Try to avoid eating solid food
Drink regular small amounts of a sweet flat drink like flat Lucozade or Cola (Make sure its the flat lucozade sport not the original fizzy lucozade as the fizzy one specifically say do not drink if you have Diarrhoea). It is better to drink small amounts regularly.
You may want to take an over the counter antidiarrheal medication like Imodium which can be very effective at easing the symptoms.
If you are feeling nauseous mint flavoured sweets or chewing gum can ease this
Most importantly if your symptoms are not improved within 48 hours go and consult your Doctor
Burns or Scalds
If you or one of your housemates is unfortunate enough to burn or scold yourselves then the most important thing you can do is not panic. Take these steps and you should know what to do
Run the burn or scalded area under cold water until it stops hurting, this can take 10-15 minutes
If the skin is blistering apply a dry, clean loose dressing and give paracetamol for the pain
If the skin is broken or the area that has been burnt/scolded is larger that 5 inches in diameter is very important that you immediately go to your local accident and emergency department

This type of injury is usually caused by damage to your ligaments and can be very painful. This pain is not going to go away over night but these are some things that you can do to help. Just remember the acronym ‘’’RICE’’’.
REST = You should be resting the area that is hurting
ICE = Applying an ice pack (or more likely a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel) for up to 30 minutes can reduce pain and swelling
COMPRESSION= If you have a bandaged that you can firmly apply to the area then do so as this can help alleviate the swelling
ELEVATION = If you elevate the damaged limb there will be less further swelling
You should be able to do gentle movement with your sprained limb within 48 hours if you aren’t able to then consult your GP

If you cut yourself it is important not to panic, you have to keep a clear head to be able to assess the situation. Here is what you should do
Wash the cut with soap and water
Put a clean dressing on it this doesn’t need to be a plaster it can be something like a clean handkerchief. Then apply pressure to reduce the bleeding
Once the bleeding has stopped put a clean dressing on the wound and take paracetamol if needed.
Go to hospital if the wound cannot be cleaned or the bleeding is uncontrollable.
Rashes
It is relatively common for people to develop rashes, this can be a mild reaction to something that you have come in contact to like a washing powder. Some people are more prone to rashes than others.

The Causes of Bad Breath?
Bad Breath is an embarrassing problem. Many of us would have suffered from bad breath at some point in our lives.
Bad Breath is usually caused by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. Bad breath is not contagious, meaning you cannot catch it from someone else. Chronic bad breath, is known as Halitosis, does not come from the stomach. The only odor that comes from the stomach is when you burp. Food eaten such as garlic and spicy foods once absorbed into the body can release odor through the lungs when you breathe. Food odors are transitory and should not be confused with bad breath. Human's sense of smell has the ability to adjust to odor. Therefore, most people with halitosis are not aware of their bad breath.
Research has shown that most bad breath originates from the mouth. It is mostly from the surface of the tongue, below the gum line, between the teeth and other hard to reach areas in the mouth. The mouth inhabits a lot of bacteria and the balance between these differ kinds of bacteria will determine the quality of our breath. This odor causing bacteria in our mouths' are anaerobic, meaning that they cannot live in the presence of oxygen. These anaerobic bacteria reside on the surface of the tongue, inhabiting between the papillae of the tongue where oxygen are deficient. These kinds of bacteria cannot be completely removed with a tongue scaper and will re-colonize in the mouth following antibodies therapy. These naturally occurring bacteria feeds on proteins and produces a by product called volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) which is the cause of bad breath.

Vitamin C VS Deadly Diseases
According to a study published in Lancet (March 2001 issue), studies have shown that extra vitamin C reduces the risk of many diseases.
Researchers measured the blood levels of vitamin C in 19,500 volunteers and kept track of their health for a 4-year period. The results showed that those folks with the highest concentration of vitamin C had about HALF the risk of dying during that time as opposed to those poor souls with the lower level of vitamin C. This testing was independent of supplement use, age and other health factors.
The research team concluded that the boost of vitamin C - a boost that is possible by eating just ONE extra daily serving of vitamin C-rich food like oranges or kiwis, could cut the risk of mortality by 20 percent.

Tea & Iron Don´t Mix Well
Tea has a compound called tannins, which are good for your health, but NOT good if you´re taking iron within 90 minutes of drinking your tea. Vitamin C VS Deadly Diseases
According to a study published in Lancet (March 2001 issue), studies have shown that extra vitamin C reduces the risk of many diseases.
Researchers measured the blood levels of vitamin C in 19,500 volunteers and kept track of their health for a 4-year period. The results showed that those folks with the highest concentration of vitamin C had about HALF the risk of dying during that time as opposed to those poor souls with the lower level of vitamin C. This testing was independent of supplement use, age and other health factors.
The research team concluded that the boost of vitamin C - a boost that is possible by eating just ONE extra daily serving of vitamin C-rich food like oranges or kiwis, could cut the risk of mortality by 20 percent.
Looks like an apple a day isn´t the only aid available for better health!

The fiber can come from various sources, like whole grains, beans, fruit, vegetables or even fiber supplements. If you take in more than 35 grams of fiber daily, you run the risk of absorbing less of important minerals such as zinc, iron, and calcium. So, just keep in mind, too much of a good thing can cause some problems.

Apple Spice 4 Grain Cereal

Your ingredients will include 4 cups water; 1/4 cup wild rice; 1/4 cup barley; 1/4 cup old-fashioned oats; 1/4 cup bulgar wheat; 1/2 cup dried apples; 1/4 cup brown sugar; 1/2 tsp cinnamon; 1/4 tsp nutmeg & 1/2 tsp cardamon. Combine 1 cup water and the wild rice in a small saucepan - simmer for 20 minutes and then remove from heat & drain. Combine rice with remaining ingredients in an oven-safe baking dish, cover loosely with foil and bake until water is absorbed - which should take about one to one and a half hours. Stir about every 20 minutes. Grains should be tender but not mushy. This casserole can be prepared the night before, leaving the baking until morning. Sweeten with maple sugar or your choice of sweetener.
